​​ABOUT THE AREA..

Xochimilco are chinampas, trajineras, museums, markets of flowers & plants, parishes, parks and forests. The canals of Xochimilco and the traditional system of cultivation of chinampas are a World Heritage Site. From its ten docks come leave more than 200 colorful trajineras to cross the canals, whose routes go to the chinampas or the Isla de las Muñecas (Doll Island). Along the way you can eat, party with friends, sing along with a mariachi or simply enjoy the beautiful landscape. Few things in Mexico City are as traditional as this one. 

Buying flowers is part of the experience of Xochimilco, as well as visiting the center of the village, with its magnificent Franciscan parish of San Bernardino of Siena, or the colorful traditional market. 

Art lovers must see at the Dolores Olmedo Patiño Museum, patron of painters like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who are key figures in Mexico’s cultural life in the last 50 years. 

In the Bosque de Nativitas you can enjoy a fresh breeze under a palapa and go horseback riding. To enjoy nature and learn about conservation, visit the San Luis Tlalxialtemalco Forest, the Xochimilco Ecological Park and the Chinampero Michmani Ecotourism Center.

SOME SUGGESTIONS..

1. Rent a trajinera and go for a ride on the canals of Xochimilco. The itineraries and prices are displayed on the docks. Enjoy the most traditional of Mexico!

2. Go have a look at the big famous flower markets of Xochimilco and be suprised about the variety of beautiful flowers and plants. 

3. If you happen to be in town, go to a party when there is a change of mayorship in Niñopa. It’s very interesting. One of the most rooted traditions in Mexico City.

4. Go to the market and try the typical dishes and appetizers directly from the numerous food stands. You can try many exiting and delicious flavors.
